Creating a photograph and or painting from fabric was a challenge I gave myself a few years back. The Whole Series has also given me the freedom to experiment with the dyeing process, specifically with “over dyeing” (2 or 3 times) to add depth and color to the fabric pieces. I start with a whole piece of fabric that I treat as a canvas. A piece of tulle is added to defuse and secure the background. Then I create a detail picture on top by layering individual shapes and forms as found in nature, creating both depth and space. Each piece dictates the construction techniques and type of fabric used.

My first exploration of using very small and different colors of fabric to create a very painterly or realistic background. Layering on a piece of netting keeps the fabric pieces in place; the actual design is then placed on top.
